During my
presidency, I met with Gov. Warren Knowles on behalf of the WVMA. Gov. Knowles spoke openly and asked about the
issues of concern to the veterinarians of the state. We visited with me for some time and I was
assured the WVMA had strong support from Gov. Knowles’ office.
In 1969, the
WVMA Executive Board voted to purchase a solid sterling silver president’s
lapel pin, I contacted Dr. Fred Born of Fond du to design the pin. Dr. Born submitted his design to the WVMA
Executive Board for approval. With the
Board’s unanimous vote, the design was approved and permission was granted to have the WVMA
Official President’s lapel pin be made.
Artist Tom Remo, of Fond du Lac was selected to make the official lapel
pin.
This
official pin is worn by the current WVMA President at all official functions
and at other medical and dental association conventions and meetings within the State of Wisconsin.*
Editor’s note: Dr. Vernon Thieleke was a very close friend,
I had worked for him during the summers of my 3rd and 4th
year in veterinary school.
*Dr. Thieleke died before we could contact
him for an interview, his son Dr. Rodney Thieleke gave the above statement as
he remembered his father comments after his presidency.
