Bloodletting instrument
The fleam is considered the oldest known surgical instrument in both
human and veterinary medicine. The lancet fleam is a "modern version."
In 1845, the practice of bloodletting was discontinued in human medicine.
Yet, there were recorded cases of bloodletting horses for lameness into
the 1960's by quacks.
Take note at your next doctor’s appointment, he/she may request a
blood test. The lab technician that will draw the blood sample will be
wearing a name tag, with the word “Phlebotomist”. The art of Phlebotomy
is bloodletting.
The most important individual to die in the U.S. from this medical
procedure of bloodletting was our first president, General George
Washington. His three doctors bleed him of five pints of blood, he died on
Dec. 14,1799 at the age of 67.
